Metabolic Health is how effective our bodies are at converting energy from food into energy that can be used by the body.
When this process is not working well - it's the main root cause of chronic diseases (e.g. diabetes, heart disease, cancer, neurological diseases, autoimmune)
The main factors that influence metabolic health are: Nutrition, microbiome, exercise, toxins, hormones, sleep, stress, age, sex and genetics.
Almost everyone on the planet will (sadly) either be impacted directly or have a loved one impacted by at least one of the chronic diseases created by metabolic dysfunction.
The impact these diseases have had on my family/friends over the last few years have driven me towards a new mission to help solve the global chronic disease epidemic (heart disease, cancer, diabetes, neurological, autoimmune).
Some staggering statistics which make this CRITICAL to solve for:
The aim of 1BMH.org is to provide education and tools to help everyone on their own metabolic health journey. Over time, more content, tools and resources will be added to cover:
Did you know that our bodies can only handle 1 teaspoon of glucose in our bloodstream! Any more than this can be toxic so our bodies have to work incredibly hard to remove excess glucose from the bloodstream. Our bodies and biology (which have evolved over millions of years) are not designed to do this regularly. With our modern diet/lifestyle we are triggering this process multiple times a day which creates insulin resistance over time.
Nutrition is one of the main causes of insulin resistance - too much sugar, ultra-processed foods and carbohydrates lead to too much glucose in the blood and the release of insulin. Repetitively triggering this over a period of time causes the body to become resistance to the effect of insulin.
The average adult now consumes 22 teaspoons of sugar a DAY compared to our evolutionary ancestors who used to consume this in a YEAR!
All chronic diseases are to varying degrees caused or made worse by insulin resistance (the inability of the hormone insulin to work as it should and enable glucose to enter the mitochondria) - and the true upstream cause of this is largely in our control (although made very difficult by the modern world).
Cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, type 2 diabetes, neurological and autoimmune diseases affect millions each year and many people are struggling with hypertension, obesity, fatty liver disease, dementia, low testosterone, menstrual irregularities, infertility and more.
More details on this and some great free resources on how you can prevent/reverse insulin resistance can be found at Insulin IQ.

Its important to evaluate everything through the lens of evolution. Our amazing but incredibly complicated biology has evolved over millions of years. We have an incredible ability to repair ourselves given the right inputs and environment. The challenge is that with our modern day lifestyle, we are living out of sync with our evolutionary biology. Our bodies are incredibly adaptable (and have evolved that way to aid our survival as a species) but these adaptations were meant for short term and emergency use, not every day.
We are all unique, so what works for one person may not work for another person. We also need to understand that we change all the time, as does our environment so our body is constantly adapting. So you need to commit to a journey of understanding yourself, your environment and that both will change over time and impact each other.
We all need to commit to taking control of our health journeys. See yourself as 'CEO' of your own health. You might not know absolutely everything about your body, but you need to know enough to surround yourself with the right team of experts to support you.
The first thing to establish is a baseline your current Metabolic Health. If you can, getting a full blood, metabolic and hormone panel blood test. This is not likely to be covered by health insurance (sadly) so will likely be an out of pocket expense. Here is a great article around blood tests and what to consider.
If this is not possible then there are some simpler tests you can do. This set of 9 questions is a great simple start to understand if you are likely to have metabolic dysfunction.
The following books/podcasts are great resources for understanding the three principles above and starting your education/journey.

The below sections outline 5 pillars for Metabolic Health. There are a lot of things that contribute to Metabolic Health. Pick one pillar and start there: see this as a journey of learning. Trying to change too much too soon can be overwhelming. Choose the pillar and tool that seems the best/easiest start for you and continue your journey and learning over time.
Focus on a real, whole food approach to nutrition in line with how our ancestors ate.
More Resources/Tools:
Focus on trying to purposefully move your body each day
More Resources/Tools:
Try and aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep per night.
More Resources/Tools:
Stress can be both good and very harmful to our bodies - but mostly we are overly stressing our biology as our modern world creates significantly more stimulation that our bodies have evolved to become comfortable with.
More Resources/Tools
Your environment and exposure to toxins can play a significant role in your metabolic health by impacting your microbiome and hormones.
